Giving Back on Valentine's Day: Vow4MAl and Makers + Goods

Julie Skon and her daughter gifting homeless with valentine's gift bags

Until this year, I have been a bit of an anti-Valentine's Day type of person. Don't get me wrong, I think celebrating love is beautiful, but it has always felt forced to me on that day, so typically, I like to sit it out.

This Valentine's day I decided to be pro-active (and not so negative) and do an act of love that could involve my two daughters and an incredible group of people. I teamed up with the local Santa Barbara organization, Vow4mal, who helps the fight against drunk driving through education and prevention and they are always willing to jump in and do good deeds. Together, we decided to donate 50 gifts for the homeless who live in our city. On Valentine's day, we all got together and filled each gift with snacks, a meal, chocolate, heart candies, and even dollar bills that friends and family provided. We then walked around Santa Barbara and gave the gifts to people who needed some extra love. The reactions are some that I will never forget. I saw faces light up, I heard stories about how long it had been since they had received a valentine, and I felt the happiness radiate from my girls after experiencing how good it feels to give. It was a day that I will always remember.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and energy and to Vow4Mal for all that you do!
